Ways to Use Excess Lemons

Why would you want to grow your own lemons?

As a child I spent a lot of time growing up around my Grandmother (Nan), who I remember growing an abundance of fruit and vegetables in her backyard.

Ways to Use Excess LemonsOne of the things I remember the most was the amount of lemons we would pick from her tree.

Being a frugal woman, my Nan hated to waste anything and she would try to find ways to use every last piece of her lemon crop.

As I spent a lot of time with Nan, I was put to good use, helping her with the task of not wasting these precious gems.

I treasure the time spent with her in the kitchen and garden, as she taught me so much about cooking and other necessary life skills, which I will never forget.

Often I’ll be doing something when suddenly, up pops a memory of something we did together and it makes me happy to recall those precious times spent, just her and I.

When I was quite young, Nan gave me a book to write recipes, hints and tips in. As the years went by and each time I learnt something new or found a good recipe, I would write it down.

Some of the ideas and recipes I wrote down were ways to use Nan’s lemons. These included:

Recipes:

  • Lemon Meringue pie
  • Lemon Butter
  • Lemonade
  • Lemon Cordial
  • Lemon Tart
  • Salad dressings – basic vinaigrette
  • Hot Toddy for a sore throat – lemon juice, honey and hot water – to sip
  • Slices or wedges of lemon added to drinks – even Beer will add a nice zest to the drink
  • Preserved lemons
  • Lemon Marmalade

Other hints and tips for Lemons:

  • Freezing juice in cubes – for recipes
  • Freezing lemon zest – for recipes
  • Cut lemons or just peel & add to garbage disposal for odours
  • Rub over cutting boards for stains and smells – wash later in soapy water
  • Tenderizer for meat dishes
  • Stain remover – rub on clothes – then wash
  • Natural bathroom cleaner for soap scum, limescale and water stains – it is amazing what a little bit of elbow grease and a natural product can do.
  • Mix lemon with water and vinegar for other tough household stains.
  • Decorations in the home – fill a vase with lemons before adding water, flowers and foliage. Great table centrepiece.
